A wonderful middle-grade novel narrated by Kenny, 9, about his middle-class black family, the Weird Watsons of Flint, Michigan. When Kenny's year-old brother, Byron, gets to be too much trouble, they head South to Birmingham to visit Grandma, the one person who can shape him up. And they happen to be in Birmingham when Grandma's church is blown up. Curtis's story is a strong one with humor, tragedy and family life finely interwoven.

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Newbery and Coretta Scott King Honoree about an unforgettable family on a road-trip during one of the most important times in the civil rights movement. Excellent read!!! This was the required reading for my daughter's English class, and the audio book with the narrator helped her so much!! Somehow I missed the fact that this book might have been intended for kids or young adults. I am glad that I didn't know because I probably would have passed on this book if I had. I don't review books often, so it's got to be really good or bad for me to take the time. This one Everything: story, narrator, history, emotion, this book has it all.
